Final Pieces:
This sculture was the last one I made and turned out to be my favorite. I chose to work with line in this one mainly because I had limited balsa wood left to work with. I decided to make skinny match sticks in two general sizes. I laid the short pieces out in a straight row and then put a strip of tape running along the back. I wrapped the tape around and made a cylinder and more tape around the base, then I took all the longer pieces and placed them inside, filled it in with wood glue, and made a packing tape "rope" and wrapped it around. Last I added two pins which makes the sculpture able to stand two interesting ways.
For this one I used proportion the guide my decisions. I found it a lot easier to cut the balsa wood in to strips rather than shapes (triangles, squares, etc.), so that sparked the idea to create the two sized boxes. Originally the center piece was going to be used on a different sculpture but it fit inside the middle square and I liked what it added to the piece.
This sculpture was the first one I started. This is my representation of texture. I started by making the general shapes and glued them together. After that I started other sculptures because I didn't know what else I wanted to do to it. Then I started noticing my wood shavings and decided to add them. The last thing I added was the masking tape and pins. I think the tape was a significant to the overall look of the piece.
This sculpture is representational of scale. The pieces go larger to smaller from the bottom. For this one I had to predetermine where I wanted to put the sticks, and cut out notches of the wood on the unglued portion. Originally I was going to add a tape rope(like in the first sculpture) and interweave it into the sculpture but I realized it overwhelmed the piece. I also really like the over all appearance of this sculpture.
